Wesley Methodist Church, Cambridge

Wesley Methodist Church, Cambridge

Wesley Methodist Church, located adjacent to Christ's Pieces in central Cambridge, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1913. The church was established with the mission of engaging and supporting young Methodist students at the University of Cambridge, as articulated by the then President of the Wesleyan Methodist Conference. This goal led to the creation of a new church to cater to the academic community, replacing an earlier Wesleyan Methodist church on Hobson Street from 1849, which was demolished to make way for the County Hall of Cambridgeshire.

The church is named after John Wesley, one of the founders of Methodism, and is architecturally designed in the Gothic Revival style. A significant refurbishment in 1990 included the installation of a historic William Hill organ originally crafted in 1844. This refurbishment modernized the church while preserving its historical essence.

Today, Wesley Methodist Church is an active religious and community center. It holds multiple services each Sunday and maintains daily prayer sessions, reflecting its role as a vibrant place of worship. The church is also a hub for social and educational activities, hosting meetings for the Cambridge Student Methodist Society (MethSoc) in its "Upper Room."

Additionally, Wesley Methodist Church is part of the broader Cambridge Methodist Circuit and maintains strong affiliations with local Methodist institutions such as Wesley House Theological College and The Leys School. These connections underscore its significant role in the religious and educational life of Cambridge.
