West Lake, Hanoi

West Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Hanoi, occupying a prominent position northwest of the city's center. The lake spans approximately 500 hectares (5.0 square kilometers) with a shore length of 17 kilometers (11 miles), making it not only the biggest lake in the capital but also a central hub for recreational activities. The area around West Lake is a scenic and vibrant locale, featuring lush gardens, luxurious hotels, and private villas, catering to both tourists and locals alike. The district of Tây Hồ, which translates to "West Lake," is named after the lake and houses most of its expanse.

The origins of West Lake are steeped in mythology and local legends. According to one popular legend, the lake was formed from a bend in the Red River and was initially known as "Fox Corpse Swamp" due to a battle that took place there between the mythical figure Lạc Long Quân and a nine-tailed fox spirit. Another folktale suggests the lake was once called "Golden Buffalo Lake" as it emerged from the tumultuous activities of a buffalo searching for its lost calf. In the 11th century, it earned the name "Foggy Lake" because of its misty conditions, before finally being renamed West Lake in 1573 to avoid the auspicious given name of Emperor Lê Thế Tông, Duy Đàm.
