Wheel of Liverpool, Liverpool

The Wheel of Liverpool is a transportable Ferris wheel located on the Keel Wharf waterfront by the River Mersey in Liverpool. Standing at an impressive 196 feet (60 meters) tall, the structure weighs 365 tonnes and features 42 fully enclosed capsules. This observation wheel, offering panoramic views of the River Mersey, the Welsh mountains, and the World Heritage Site waterfront at Pier Head, has become an iconic part of Liverpool’s skyline.

The Wheel of Liverpool was first opened on 25 March 2010, following three years of planning by Great City Attractions. Its construction, completed on 11 February 2010, replaced a smaller observation wheel at the Liverpool One leisure complex. The new wheel, 5 meters taller than its predecessor, was built to boost tourism and enhance the city’s attractions. It cost £6 million to manufacture and construct, featuring 75,000 LED lights for nighttime illumination and silent operation supported by six 30-meter columns.

Initially owned by Great City Attractions, the wheel closed temporarily in July 2012 due to the company's administration. It was later acquired by Dubai-based Freij Entertainment International and refurbished in the Netherlands in late 2020, reopening with updated LED lighting in summer 2021.

The capsules, each accommodating up to eight passengers, provide a 360-degree panoramic view of the city and its surroundings. One luxury capsule features a glass floor for a unique experience. A complete ride lasts about 10 to 12 minutes, covering three full rotations. Designed for comfort and quiet operation, the Wheel of Liverpool is supported on a foundation of 300 tonnes of water.

Today, the Wheel of Liverpool remains a favorite for locals and tourists alike, offering unforgettable views and a unique perspective on one of England’s most dynamic cities.
