Tower of Numbers, Rotterdam
Named after the numbers that were visible on its surfaces starting from the inauguration of the Erasmus Bridge on September 4, 1996, the Tower of Numbers holds its distinctive title. This tower was adorned with five digital displays suspended from its mast, each showcasing various sequences of numbers. These sequences encompassed the current time, temperature readings, heart rhythm patterns, random numerical values, and the global population count.
The Tower's architectural intent was to encapsulate the vibrant motion and fluidity of the Kop van Zuid area, which was then undergoing significant developmental growth. Crafted by the skilled architect Peter Wilson, this structure stands adjacent to the base of the Erasmus Bridge and faces the Toren op Zuid, popularly known as the KPN building. The latter edifice was designed by Renzo Piano and boasts a nighttime illumination consisting of 896 luminous green lamps that illuminate its facade.
Peter Wilson, hailing from Melbourne, Australia (born 1950), earned distinction by being awarded the President's Prize in 2009. Conferred by the Victorian Department of the Australian Institute of Architects, this accolade recognized Wilson's enduring contributions to the field. Within the city of Rotterdam, he is also acknowledged for his architectural masterpiece, the New Luxor Theatre. Additionally, Wilson's creative prowess extended to designing the Brink Center located in Hengelo.
