Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, Christchurch

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve is a wildlife park and nature reserve located in Christchurch. It is renowned for its extensive efforts in the conservation of native species, including the tuatara, kiwi, brown teal, and Duvaucel's gecko. Notably, it is home to the only pair of takahē on display in the South Island outside a Department of Conservation facility, making it a unique attraction for wildlife enthusiasts.

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve boasts a collection of 95 species, categorically divided into exotics, heritage farmyard, and New Zealand natives. The exotics section features a wide range of international species such as blue and gold macaws, scarlet macaws, capybara, small-clawed otter, ring-tailed lemurs, black-and-white ruffed lemurs, star tortoise, leopard tortoise, and green iguana, offering a global wildlife experience.

The heritage farmyard section is dedicated to the preservation of rare farm animal breeds in collaboration with the Rare Breeds Conservation Society. This section houses Arapawa goats, Damara sheep, Enderby Island rabbits, and zebu, among others, focusing on the conservation of these dying breeds.

The New Zealand natives section is a showcase of the country's unique fauna, including kea, kaka, North Island brown kiwi, South Island brown kiwi, Okarito brown kiwi, great spotted kiwi, morepork, New Zealand falcon, and tuatara. This section plays a crucial role in the conservation and display of native species, providing visitors with an opportunity to learn about New Zealand's distinctive wildlife.

You can roam around on your own fine or sign up for the guided tour to better appreciate some of the birds showcased.

Tip:
Feed the eel and farm animals (bags can be bought at the main entrance) because it could otherwise be boring for you.
The kiwis in the special nocturnal house are hard to spot, but do be patient and try to see one!
