Wilmington and Western Railroad, Wilmington

Wilmington and Western Railroad, Wilmington (must see)

The Wilmington and Western Railroad is an operating railroad museum. Visitors can ride the train while enjoying living history all around them. They will also see amazing views as the train travels on its route.

The railroad operates a variety of locomotives. One of these is the Doodlebug, which was built by Pullman Standard in 1929. The car has been retrofitted with a modern bathroom, heating and air conditioning. It seats 60 passengers.

The other locomotives open to passengers are the diesel-run SW1 Switcher 114 and Baltimore & Ohio SW1 Switcher 8408l Both were built in 1940. The railroad has three steam-powered engines. The 0-6-0 Switcher 58, built in 1907, is the only one that is currently operational. The 1910 2-6-0 Mogul 92 and the 1837 4-4-0 American 98 are awaiting restoration.

Visitors who do not wish to ride the rails can explore the station on foot. They can spend time at the station, which was built in 1872. A gift shop sits inside Greenbank Station, which is a nice place to kill a few minutes or wait for a train.
