Worcester Center for Crafts, Worcester

The Worcester Center for Crafts, located on Sagamore Road in Worcester, is one of the city's oldest cultural institutions and a pioneering organization in the American craft movement. Established in 1856 by the Worcester Employment Society, the Center was originally founded to provide women—particularly immigrants—with the skills needed to create and sell handcrafts, fostering economic independence and social empowerment.

The Center is a dynamic hub for creativity, offering hands-on learning experiences in a variety of craft disciplines. Its fully equipped studios provide spaces for ceramics, stained glass, glass fusing, jewelry-making, forging, bladesmithing, blacksmithing, enameling, and both digital and darkroom photography. As a vibrant community of makers, students and artists alike share a passion for craftsmanship and artistic expression.

Complementing its educational offerings, the Worcester Center for Crafts also serves as a showcase for creative work. The Krikorian Gallery exhibits regional and national artists, while the Handcrafted Shop features the work of over 200 American artisans, offering visitors a chance to purchase unique, handmade pieces. The shop is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM, with extended hours on Thursdays until 8 PM, and offers online shopping as well.

Education remains a cornerstone of the Center, with adult and youth classes available in multiple disciplines, running from September through July. Special events celebrate the art of craft, including the Holiday Festival of Crafts (held the weekend after Thanksgiving), the Spring Pottery Invitational, and July’s Hot Night in the City, all of which invite the public to engage in the craft-making process.

The Worcester Center for Crafts is more than just a place—it is an experience and a passion. Whether you come to learn, shop, or appreciate, the Center invites you to immerse yourself in the joy of making and celebrating handcrafted artistry.
