Xhamia e Tabakeve Mosque (Tanners' Mosque), Tirana

The Tanners' Mosque (Xhamia e Tabakëve) in Tirana stands as a significant historical monument, embodying the rich cultural heritage of the region. Situated near the Tanners' Bridge, this mosque is deeply rooted in the local history, being constructed in the neighborhood of the Tanners' Guild. This guild was known for its handicraft trade, marking the mosque as a center for the community's social and religious life since its establishment in the 17th century during the Ottoman Empire.

Despite suffering damage from a lightning strike, the Tanners' Mosque has been preserved and remains operational, largely due to the dedicated care of the Resmja family. This family's continued involvement highlights a personal commitment to the mosque's preservation, ensuring its doors stay open for worship and community gatherings.

The mosque is one of Tirana's oldest, sharing its historical significance with the Kokonazi Mosque. It dates back to the 18th century, a period that saw the construction of many such religious sites in the Ottoman Empire. However, its journey through time has not been without interruption. From 1967 to 1990, during the communist regime in Albania, the mosque was closed to worshipers, reflecting the broader suppression of religious practices during this time. It was only after the fall of communism in 1990 that the mosque was reopened and restored, allowing it to resume its role as a place of worship and community focal point.
