Zoological Garden, Basel
The Zoological Garden Basel, or Zoo Basel, is Switzerland's oldest zoo, established in 1874. Fondly known as “Zolli” by locals, the zoo is situated near Basel’s downtown area, extending into the scenic Birsig stream valley up to the city’s border with Binningen. With over 500 species from all seven continents and attracting 1.8 million visitors annually, Zoo Basel holds the title of Switzerland’s most-visited paid tourist attraction.
Zoo Basel has earned global recognition, ranked among the world’s top 15 zoos by Forbes Traveler in 2008 and as Europe’s seventh best zoo by the Zoological Society of London in 2009. It is celebrated for pioneering breeding programs, including the first Indian rhinoceros birth and greater flamingo hatch in captivity. The zoo’s efforts have also led to significant successes in breeding species such as cheetahs, okapi, pygmy hippos, and flamingos.
Notably, every Somali wild ass in zoos worldwide traces its lineage to Basel, where this species’ zoological breeding program began. Currently, the zoo is engaged in over 40 conservation breeding programs, underscoring its dedication to preserving endangered species.
The zoo’s highlights include an Aquarium with 6,000 animals from 480 species, including penguins that stroll outdoors in winter; an African Themed Area with immersive wildlife settings like Etosha and Gamgoas Houses; a renovated Rhino Exhibit (2008–2010) featuring streams, ponds, and jungle-like indoor spaces; and expanded Ape Exhibits (2012) with outdoor habitats 100 times larger than before.
Much like New York’s Central Park, Zoo Basel serves as a beloved urban retreat for the city’s residents. Its thoughtful exhibit designs and commitment to conservation make it a standout institution, blending education, recreation, and environmental stewardship. Whether observing playful penguins or marveling at pioneering conservation programs, visitors to Zoo Basel are sure to leave inspired.

Basel Introduction Walking Tour
The modern and bustling city of Basel gets its name from a third-century Roman castle that stood here. It is likely the modernization of "Villa Basilius," or "Estate of Basilius." Interestingly, the basilisk has been closely associated with the city and used in the coat of arms and coins. The association is likely simple assonance rather than anything more profound.

Basel is the city of churches. Indeed, nowhere else in Switzerland will you find as many of them, both old and new, as here. Despite serious losses to the Reformation period, a good number of local temples have survived. Today, the vast majority of religious buildings, including the listed medieval Basel Minster, belong to the Evangelical Reformed Church.
