Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, Pecs

Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, Pecs

The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter in Pecs is a sprawling cultural and artistic complex built on the grounds of the historic Zsolnay porcelain factory. This five-hectare site, beautifully restored and transformed, celebrates the legacy of the Zsolnay family, whose factory, founded in 1853, played a decisive role in the development of Hungarian applied arts. Recognizing its cultural and industrial heritage, the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter was declared a Hungaricum (a unique Hungarian attraction) in 2014.

One of the key attractions is the Gyugyi Collection, housed in the restored Villa Sikorski. This collection, known as The Golden Age of Zsolnay, showcases 700 rare Zsolnay porcelain pieces. Complementing this is the Pink Exhibition, displaying 1,200 early Zsolnay works, alongside the Family and Factory History Exhibition, which traces the story of the Zsolnay manufactory and its founding family.

The Zsolnay Mausoleum, standing on a nearby hill, is another historical highlight. This grand resting place of the Zsolnay family, guarded by 42 lion sculptures, is associated with the famous eosin glaze, a secret formula that gave Zsolnay ceramics their characteristic iridescent sheen.

In addition to its historical and artistic significance, the Quarter is a vibrant center for contemporary culture. The Pecs Gallery m21 and the E78 concert hall host art exhibitions, concerts, and theater performances. Visitors can also explore the streets of artisans who offer unique local crafts and traditional Zsolnay ceramics.

Today, the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter attracts visitors from around the world, offering a harmonious blend of history, culture, and modern creativity. The site not only preserves the Zsolnay family’s artistic heritage but also fosters innovation, education, and artistic expression, making it a cornerstone of cultural life in Pecs.
