Hangzhou has been immortalised across centuries due to its influence on painters, poets and voyagers—most famously in the Western hemisphere through Marco Polo’s 13th century expedition and its importance further cemented through its inclusion as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Almost 10 years later, I feel it is apt to pay respect through a more comprehensive guide featuring the 30 classic scenes that had been canonized in the collective memory of Chinese history—all of which had been lovingly, poetically named.

The first 10 sights were made famous initially during the reign of the Southern Song dynasty. Sights no. 11-20 were canonized in early modern history with some made famous during the Qing dynasty, while sights no. 21-30 were admitted into the hall of fame by the Hangzhou government in 2007.
