Latvia isn’t exactly a country with a long list of established travel destinations to its name. So when I went back for my second trip there, I was highly motivated to find new places to visit. One that quickly emerged was the city of Jēkabpils, Latvia’s smallest city. Easy to reach, home to a castle and a UNESCO world heritage site, visiting Jekabpils seemed like a no-brainer. A small and quite modest city, if you decide to visit Jekabpils you’ll learn there’s a few things to see and do. Here’s what you have waiting for you.
Before jumping headfirst into its attractions, here’s a little information about the city of Jekabpils. The city is located southeast of Riga, lying on the border of the Latgale and Kurzeme regions. Separating the city across these regions is the Daugava River, the longest river that passes through Latvia. While all one city now, these two halves of the city were once the unconnected towns of Jekabpils and Krustpils.
It’s only since 1962 that the two have been joined together, although it seems like centuries have separation haven’t been quickly erased. With a visit here, most of the attractions you’ll see are over on the left-hand bank that was the historic centre of Jēkabpils. ......
