The street art (mural) in George Town is one of the most popular tourist attraction in Penang (Malaysia). These Instagram-worthy wall paintings have, in recent years, attracted a large number of visitors looking for photo ops to spice up their social media feeds. However, it is often difficult for visitors to locate these murals, which are scattered across George Town’s myriad of lanes and alleys.
As early as 2012, Penang’s municipal council decided to spice up the art scene in the old sections of George Town. Consequently, the council collaborated with Ernest Zacharevic, a young and promising Lithuanian artist, to start work on a series of mural depicting nostalgia every-day scenes from the past decades. Resulting in a string of captivating wall paintings spread across central George Town.
Following the initial success of these street art pieces, the council started work with a local art company on a series of steel rod caricature sculptures. And along the way, many local artists start to contribute to the ever-growing list of wall paintings in George Town.
