Alphabet City Walk (Self Guided), New York
When you take a stroll through Alphabet City you could be forgiven for thinking that you have walked onto a movie set. This is gritty, urban New York with low-rise buildings and colorful characters on the streets. Situated in the East Village, but apart from it, this hip neighborhood has an independent and bohemian spirit, and in recent years has been cleaning itself up a bit.
Alphabet City is a good choice for clothes shopping with a number of small indie boutiques, where you can create a look that is uniquely yours. You will not see big chain stores in the neighborhood. Alphabet City also appeals because of its dozens of small restaurants, some expensive, others less so. For an enjoyable brunch, lunch or dinner there is a variety of culinary options throughout the area that won't let you down.
If you are after delicious food and ingredients, visit the weekly farmers' market in Tompkins Square Park. Purchase such delightful goodies as orchard fruit and berries, farmstead cheese, maple syrup and baked goods. There is also a dog run here and you may be able to catch a musical performance. Other events at the market include family-friendly activities, cooking demonstrations and seasonal festivals and celebrations.
