Delfshaven Walk, Rotterdam

Delfshaven Walk (Self Guided), Rotterdam

Delfshaven reveals a very different side to the rest of modern day Rotterdam. This is very much the old part of the city with cobblestone streets and an ambience that takes you back a few hundred years. In fact, Delfshaven is the only historic part of the city. There is an old 18th century-windmill here that used to mill grain for distilleries, and rows of beautiful old houses that line the waterfront.

In 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers left Delfshaven on their way to what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts in the United States. The main reason that the area has retained much of its historic character is that it escaped relatively unscathed from World War II bombing raids that decimated many other parts of this South Holland city. The area appears made for walking with old world charm and character everywhere you go.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll by the lovely canal waterfront where you will see a number of moored sailing boats bobbing up and down. Stop by a welcoming restaurant or pub for a drink and a meal. Some of these places boast wonderful views of the water. Tour the streets that are situated around the canal and find some of the neighborhood's other attractions, including theaters and art galleries.
