Little India Walk, Singapore

Little India Walk (Self Guided), Singapore

It is loud, lively and colorful, one of Singapore's most exciting cultural enclaves. As the name suggests, Little India is Singapore’s Indian quarter and provides a delightful glimpse into Indian culture. Wander through the streets, alleys and back lanes where numerous trades ply their wares. Buy sweet garlands of jasmine from flower sellers, have your fortune told and pick up a paper from a street-side newspaper vendor. Visit street markets and revel in the delicious aromas and vibrant colors of fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices.

One of the principle shopping destinations is the Mustafa Center, where you can find lots of items for the home, Indian spices, textiles, electronic goods and much more. Some of the prices here are the lowest you will find in Singapore, and you can shop all day and all night if you want to, because it is open for 24 hours.

Go to the Little India Precinct to witness Hindu rituals in its temples. There are several places of worship, including the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple and Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple. This latter temple is believed to have been founded in 1830 and among the deities worshipped here are Vinayagar or Ganapathi, the elephant god and Saneeswarar (Saturn), one of the planetary deities.
