Old Town Shopping & Dining Walk (Self Guided), Alghero
Alghero's Old Town is a wonderful maze of narrow lanes and piazzas that juts out over the cool Mediterranean Sea. It is a great environment in which to shop, dine and stroll. The area is famous for its coral jewelry pieces which can be bought in many of the shops. Red coral is found off the coast not far from here, and it is fashioned into beautiful creations that you will see everywhere. Another local produce that wins favor with visitors and locals alike is the smooth and flavorful gelato, also on sale in many of the Old Town's shops.
The principal shopping streets are Via Carlo Alberto, Via Gilbert Ferret and Via Roma, with Carlo Alberto being the main and busiest street. Crowds flock here for the jewelry shops and bars. There are more jewelry stores over on Via Roma, which is also noted for its fashion shops. On Via Gilbert Ferret there is a good collection of elegant boutiques. Another popular shopping destination in the old district is the Arts, Crafts and Antiques Market on the Piazza Civico, held on the last Saturday of every month. Search the stalls for collectables, vintage rarities, handcrafted goods and exciting artworks. The market is a bargain hunter's delight.
