Penjaringan Walk (Self Guided), Jakarta
Step back in time with a visit to the Penjaringan sub district of Jakarta, an old part of the city with a wealth of historic attractions. Among them are the remains of the city wall of Batavia, the old name of Jakarta.
See Dutch colonial buildings and structures that date back to the 17th century. Among them are the former warehouses of the Dutch East India Company which is now home to the Maritime Museum.
Nearby is the Pasar Ikan, the early morning fish market. Whether or not you want to furnish your fridge with delicious fresh fish, the market is a must-see place for the spectacle of stalls filled with a vast array of seafood, and the loud and lively scene. Come back here later in the day to browse the wares of dozens of souvenir sellers who flock here in the afternoon. Pasar Ikan is also the name of a neighborhood, where a maze of streets are lined with small shops that sell just about every household item under the sun.
Penjaringan also includes some of Jakarta’s original mangrove forest, part of which contains Muara Angke Wildlife Reserve. This verdant green protected area is where dozens of endemic bird species and other types of wildlife live, including long-tailed macaques.
