Chapelle de Sainte Ursule de la Sorbonne (Sorbonne Chapel), Paris
Located within the grand complex of the Sorbonne, the Chapel of Saint Ursula was originally constructed in the 13th century, having underwent a transformation in the 17th century to make way for a more fitting Roman Catholic place of worship. The layout of the former medieval chapel is still visible in the main courtyard of the historic Sorbonne complex.
This impressive structure was commissioned as part of a restoration initiative spearheaded by Cardinal Richelieu, a prominent religious figure and statesman who served as the principal of the College of Sorbonne. Access is restricted to guided tours, offering visitors an opportunity to marvel at its exterior before stepping inside.
The building is widely recognized as a masterpiece of French Classical architecture. Take note of its grand scale, the symmetrical Corinthian columns, and the striking elegance of the dome. Designed by the esteemed French architect and engineer Jacques Lemercier, it is believed to be the first French building featuring an extravagant dome resting on a high drum.
During the turbulent days of the French Revolution, the chapel fell victim to looting, with many statues and paintings stolen, and the grand mausoleum defaced. Richelieu's gravesite, along with those of his kin, was desecrated, and their remains were callously thrown into a communal grave. The chapel suffered severe damage, and its demolition was considered. Thankfully, reason prevailed, and the building was spared. Its preservation was ensured when it was officially declared a historical monument in 1887.
