Established by Louis XIV in 1680, the Comédie-Française holds an esteemed status as the oldest active theatre company globally, and is renowned as the most prestigious institution in French theatre. Since 1799, their home has been the grand Italian-style Salle Richelieu theatre, designed by Victor Louis and situated near the Palais-Royal, where they excel in presenting splendid classical French plays from renowned playwrights like Molière, Racine, and Marivaux. A statue of Molière, deemed the patron of French actors, as well as his director's chair, are proudly displayed within. It is highly recommended to book their weekend guided tours well in advance, as they sell out quickly, sometimes months ahead of time.
