Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume (Arts Centre), Paris
Originating in the year 1986, the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume is a museum of contemporary art situated in the north-western corner of the Tuileries Gardens. The rectangular edifice, fashioned during the sovereignty of Napoleon III in 1861, initially housed tennis courts (the French term for which is "jeu de paume"), later serving as a depot for Jewish cultural possessions.
In 1991, the Jeu de Paume rekindled its presence as "the inaugural national gallery of contemporary art in France", inaugurated by an exposition in honour of Jean Dubuffet. Consecutive retrospectives commemorated international artists. The year of 1999 bore witness to the museum's choice of American architect Richard Meier as the subject of its inaugural architectural exhibition. The Jeu de Paume has since evolved into a hub for modern and postmodern photography and media, housing mounting survey exhibitions.
