High Roller, Las Vegas (must see)
The High Roller, located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, is an enormous Ferris wheel standing at a height of 550 feet (167.6 meters). It was introduced to the public on March 31, 2014, under the ownership and operation of Caesars Entertainment. At the time of its debut, it held the distinction of being the tallest Ferris wheel globally, surpassing the previous record holder, the Singapore Flyer, by 9 feet (2.7 meters). However, as of October 2021, it now holds the position of the world's second-tallest Ferris wheel, with Ain Dubai taking the top spot.
The wheel relies on a pair of custom-designed spherical roller bearings, weighing approximately 19,400 pounds (8,800 kilograms) each, to facilitate its rotation. During construction, the outer rim, composed of 28 sections measuring 56 feet (17 meters) in length, was temporarily supported by two 275-foot (84 meters) radial struts before being permanently secured by four cables.
The passenger cabins, known as capsules, are affixed to the outer rim of the wheel and are individually rotated by electric motors to maintain a level floor throughout each complete revolution. Originally designed to accommodate 32 cabins with a capacity of 40 passengers each, the final configuration features 28 cabins, each capable of carrying 40 individuals. Additionally, the cabins are equipped with eight flat-screen televisions.
After dusk, the High Roller comes alive with a vibrant display facilitated by a 2,000-LED system. The lighting system can project a solid color, display different colored sections, showcase a range of colors moving around the rim, and create customized presentations for special occasions and holidays.
