The Hiroshima Park is a green area in the centre of the Schleswig-Holstein state capital Kiel. It is located between the town hall and the Kleiner Kiel and commemorates the first dropping of an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The green area was created in 1934 as Bismarckanlagen in memory of the former German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. The Kiel police chief approved the name on May 18, 1934. By resolution of the Kiel City Council on May 21, 1987, the name was changed to Hiroshima Park. On the northwestern part of the site of the now approximately 16,000 m² park, the Kiel School of Academics stood on Lorentzendamm from 1868 until it was destroyed in 1944. From 1950 to 2002, the sandstone sculpture The Slumbering Woman by Richard Engelmann was located in the park, which has since been returned to its original location in Schrevenpark, where it had stood since 1926. Since 1986, a memorial service has been held in the park every year on August 6 to commemorate the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

The Hiroshimapark is a little park just a few steps away from to the city's townhall. It's directly at a brackish water called "Kleiner Kiel", which has its connection to the Kieler Förde. In the middle of the park there are water fountains, where kids can have fun in the summer.

The Hiroshimapark green area, where the popular Jeppe-Hein fountain is one of the attractions, offers many Kielers important recreational opportunities in the middle of the city. ***PH***
