Opernhaus Kiel (Kiel Opera House), Kiel
The Kiel Opera House is a listed building in the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein and the venue of the Kiel Theater. Following an architectural competition announced in 1898, the Kiel magistrate commissioned the Berlin architect Heinrich Seeling in 1902 to build the city theater, a venue for drama and musical theater. The construction of the brick building, designed in the Art Nouveau style with rich sandstone structure and lavishly modeled roof zone, lasted from 1905 to 1907. On October 1, 1907, the theater on what was then Neumarkt was inaugurated with the prologue to Parsifal, the prologue to Der Kunst ein Haus and the performance of Fidelio.
The opera house, built between 1905 and 1907, stands next to the town hall in the heart of the state capital Kiel and is the big stage in the north. The building was badly destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt in the early 1950s. The interior, in the "new modern" style of the time, is a listed building. The red-brick Art Nouveau building has a computer-controlled lower and upper stage machinery and a revolving stage with a wide range of performance options and state-of-the-art lighting and sound technology. The Kiel Opera House seats over 800 spectators and is popular for its wide-ranging program of baroque opera, canon works of musical theater, musicals and operettas as well as for the ballet performances of its own company. Secondary venues such as the foyers or the Klaiber Studio are used for more experimental music theater productions as well as chamber concerts.
The Kiel Opera House is not only a listed building, but is also the home of the theater in Kiel. The building's architecture, completed in 1907, was the result of an architectural competition that was won by Heinrich Seeling. The theater and concert hall regularly delights audiences with a varied program through the world of baroque operas, canon works, musicals, operettas and much more. There is also entertainment for the youngest, as there is also a children's and youth theater in the opera house. The Q-Park Altstadt parking garage is just 700 meters away, from where you can conveniently start your visit to the theater. ***PH***
