University of Avignon, Avignon
Avignon University is a public university located in Avignon. Originally founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII, the university boasts a rich history that includes a closure during the French Revolution in 1792 and a revival in 1984 under the name University of Avignon and Vaucluse, following the establishment of a Faculty of Sciences annex from Aix-Marseille in 1963. In 2018, it adopted its current name, Avignon Université.
The university operates across two main campuses: the Hannah Arendt Campus in the city center and the Jean-Henri Fabre Campus on the outskirts of Avignon. The Hannah Arendt Campus, set amidst historic buildings including the former Sainte-Marthe Hospital, primarily hosts courses in arts, humanities, and law. It also accommodates the university's administration, the Maurice Agulhon University Library, and a fitness center. Meanwhile, the Jean-Henri Fabre Campus, located 9 kilometers southeast of Hannah Arendt, is a hub for science and technology education, featuring modern buildings and spacious lawns. This campus includes the Agroparc facility dedicated to STEM teaching and research, as well as the Avignon University Institute of Technology and the Agroparc library.
Avignon University is well-regarded for its commitment to international education, highlighted by its award of the ERASMUS University Charter for Higher Education from the European Commission in 2021.
